Intelligence and Reconnaissance
Effective protection of a military installation begins with comprehensive surveillance of the surrounding area. This can be done by deploying acoustic and optical systems and radars capable of supplying accurate, instantaneous data.
The acoustic sensors, deployed beyond the line of sight along a radius measuring up to 10 km, provide an initial idea of the number and size of approaching vehicles. The Operations Centre processes this information, and uses a friend/foe identification system to reliably distinguish friendly vehicles from potentially hostile ones.
Rheinmetall's acoustic sensors can also determine the exact location of an acoustic signal–e.g. the firing of a mortar round–thus enabling immediate countermeasures. As to optical sensors, Rheinmetall's array extends from cameras for monitoring security fences to high-performance optics capable of supplying exact images day and night.
High-tech sniper detector systems make it possible to identify potential threats before it is too late, enabling split-second interruption of the sniper's line of sight and the safe evacuation of endangered persons.
Mobile optical sensors such as drones and robots can supply information on known danger zones without having to expose troops to unnecessary risks.

Optical and biometric systems in special mobile shelters can reliably and effectively identify persons and thus control access to installations and facilities. If an unauthorized person attempts to gain entry, he can be quickly and securely isolated, and the security team alerted.
For monitoring the installation's airspace, Rheinmetall Defence offers special radar systems specifically designed to detect small, slow, low-flying objects. This makes them ideal for tracking the flight path of incoming rockets, artillery and mortar rounds (RAM), again enabling timely and effective countermeasures.
Selecting and networking the right sensors for the specific situation is crucial, as is the total automation of processes. Networking the individual sensors makes it possible to attain a significantly higher degree of protection than would otherwise be the case.
